At Eye Physicians of Long Beach, we understand the importance of good vision. Dr. James Donovan often performs an eyelid surgery known as a blepharoplasty which removes excessive eyelid skin that impairs eyesight. The procedure is often considered a medically necessary procedure that may be covered by insurance if the eyelids interfere with your field of vision; otherwise it is considered a cosmetic procedure that will not be covered by insurance.
Depending on the level of severity, the surgery may be performed right in the office. The surgery involves removal or repositioning of the excessive upper eyelid tissue that impairs vision. Both upper and lower eyelid procedures may be performed depending on the nature of the condition. Typically, the excess skin on the upper lid will hang over the eyelashes and block peripheral vision or affect the outer and upper part of the field of vision; this may cause trouble with reading or driving. Patients who have less severe amounts of excessive skin may have the procedure for cosmetic reasons; for example patients looking to improve "bags" under their eyes or trying desire to reduce wrinkles.
A blepharoplasty is performed by making external incisions along the skin lines of the eyelid(s), at the creases of the upper lids, and below the lashes, or on the inside surface of the lower eyelids. Depending on the severity of the condition, the procedure may take up to three hours to complete. Following surgery, swelling and bruising may be substantial for the first two weeks, but will resolve in the next several weeks.
