Gynecomastia may be emotionally devastating to a teen or adult male. Many males with gynecomastia may suffer from feelings of embarrassment, humiliation, and shame. One may even suffer from significant anxiety from just taking off their shirt at the beach or pool.

If the gynecomastia is a cause of obesity, weight loss may improve the condition, but does not usually completely eliminate it.

Surgical options for correcting male breast enlargement include liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. If the excess tissue consists mostly of fatty tissue, liposuction is a good treatment option. Dr. Grover prefers "power-assisted liposuction" as his preferred technique of liposuction. If the excess tissue is mainly due to glandular tissue, then excision is preferred through a periareolar (by the dark skin around the nipple) approach. If a component of both excess glandular tissue and adipose tissue exists, a combination of power assisted liposuction and excision are performed in combination. The procedures are performed under general anesthesia in a outpatient surgery center and is a same day procedure. Patients go home the same day and are seen within 24 to 48 hours postoperatively.
